It was a bit cold for tonight’s club run, it gave me a chance to try out my new running tights, I thought I might felt a bit warmer than when I run with bare legs.

But no it just felt the same.

It was speed training and we had to partner with someone and do a half circuit round the town centre.

I did the second half, it was not too hard on the sprint itself the hard part was getting between my finish and start points.

I had an uphill jog to my start and on a couple of occasions I only just got my breath back before my partner was finishing his sprint.

I had been running faster than normal, but I did not want to go too hard and have to stop too early, on the last time round I pushed a bit harder.

I must have been working hard enough as I found the run back to the club a bit of an effort.

Running Monday 25 Dec 17

Monday’s are running days no matter if it is Christmas day or not, I did not know how it would go as I had been out drinking last night.

The plan was to try and run for about four miles, the route I picked came out to three and a half miles.

I did not feel hung-over but I thought I better not push it, the first mile was hard work but after that it became easier.

It was a bit like when I first started running I had nothing to record my runs, and I could not record this one because my mobile phone is faulty.

So when I tried to pick the pace up a bit I could not tell if I had, I probably didn’t my breathing did not seem to get any harder.

Running Saturday 23 Dec 17

Right from the start of the run I felt like I wanted to quit, I was blaming the other runs I did this week thinking that it was because we did a lot of hill runs.

Then when I got home and looked a Strava I found out why, I did not realise that I was running at this pace I thought I was doing between 11 and 11.30.

It’s funny how you don’t seem to try but yet you put in a faster time than you thought you were going to do.

There was a bloke in front of me on the last downhill section, I passed him about half way down, he just looked like he was jogging and not putting a lot of effort into it.

Shortly after he came past me, he seemed to be putting in the same amount of effort as he was when I passed him.

I tried to put in a sprint towards the end and pass him but I did not have a lot left, anyway he was younger than me that’s why I could not catch him.

That’s my story and I am sticking to it 😊

Running Wednesday 20 Dec 17

Hill training tonight, I was glad that it had warmed up a bit and there were no worries about slipping on ice.

I had done these hills once before and managed to get three circuits in like the last time.

There are three hills I started in the shortest of the three, and worked my way up to the longest of them.

I like to try and keep running on all the hills and tried to pace myself so that I could keep going.

As you can imagine the climb up the longest hill the last time round was a bit of a struggle

I don’t know if I am going about it the right way, should I be going all out and doing less circuits.

Or will be able to build up to more times round doing what I am doing now.

Running Monday 18 Dec 17

I went out with the intermediate group tonight and I spent the whole run at the back of the group.

I felt like I was holding everyone up, but of course they are too polite to complain.

The first part of the run going away from the club is a long steady climb, then the next part was flat not to bad I did not get too far behind.

Then we came to a crossroad uphill to the left, flat straight on I thought we might be going straight on, but we turned downhill now I don’t mind going downhill.

But I knew that after going down we had a long climb back up, well once we got back up the hill I was told that it would be either flat or downhill the rest of the way back.

We could have gone a route that was flatish but no we had to go up another hill, at the top of that one someone said it’s all downhill from here.

It wasn’t because we found another hill to go up, by the time I got up that I was nearly on my knees but I made it back in one piece.

It was a good run I found the uphill parts difficult, that could be down to my lack of running experience or just that I am an old git.

Running Saturday 16 Dec 17

A cold and frosty morning, but the Parkrun went ahead with one or two icy patches, it looked like someone had been round and put a bit of grit down which made it better for running on.

I forgot to set Strava up before the run started, and activated it while running, I don’t know if it was the cold or just that it could not get a proper signal when I was running.

And it did not record the run properly, I had only got a few yards away from the start but it only recorded two miles.

The run itself went well, I did not try to break any records I just wanted to make sure I got round alright.

I felt strong on the last part of the hill section on the third lap, and managed to put in a sprint for the finish.

I could hear someone coming up at the back of me but I was determined they were not going to pass me.

The official Parkrun time was 33.54.

Running Wednesday 13 Dec 17

I did not think I was going to be able to go to the club run tonight, it has been raining heavy all day and I was not going to go if it had not stopped.

It did stop long enough for the club run, I had three layers of clothing on and still felt the ice cold wind through them.

It was speed training round a 400 metre circuit with a short break in between, fortunately the area was sheltered from the wind.

I manage to find a group that ran at my level, I am not sure how many times we went round the circuit but I was starting to lag behind after a while.

I have not done a lot of this type of running. I am pleased with my efforts and I am sure I will be able to keep up and not lag behind with a few more of these sessions under my belt.

The run back to the club was a lot slower than the run out to where we did this training, but I was back in the car when the rain came again.

Running Monday 11 Dec 17

I had planed on going to the club tonight but it is forecast to be minus two degrees tonight.

So I decided to go on a cross country run, the reason I decided to go off road was because I thought I might slip running round the streets.

I took a route I had not been on before, and I came across a long hill it felt like it was never going to end.

It was a good run and my off road shoes gripped well in the snow, I just had to keep my eyes open to puddles hidden under the snow.

One thing about running in the snow it keeps your running shows clean.

There were one or two areas when I got back on the road where it looked a bit icy, I slowed down and took a little bit of extra care going past these parts.

Since starting running I have tried to push myself and not walk on runs, but the finish of today’s run was up hill and I just had to walk part of it.

It might have been that long hill that took it out of me.

Running Wednesday 06 Dec 17

Winter training this week took the form of hill runs, the target was seven to ten hill climbs.

The hills were not particularly steep but they were quite long, after the first one I set a target of doing five.

At that point that’s all I felt like I could do, and I thought I might have to push myself to get them.

I managed to do seven which I am very pleased with, my calf muscles started feeling tight again on the run back to the club.

I hope this does not mean they are going to get as bad as they were at the weekend.

Running Saturday 02 Dec 17

It was the Harriers cross country today, and they picked a good day for it.

I have got to say it was a tough route, or should I say it was tough for me the guys that lapped me did not seem to have any problems.

They said it was 3 times round for the men and twice for the women, it seemed to take forever to do the first circuit.

They said there would be hills some of them were more like mountains, one of the slopes had ropes to help you to get up.

At the mud hole there was a couple of guys waiting to take pictures of people getting stuck.

Fortunately I managed to get over it without any problems, on the third lap because I was on my own a couple guys came back to run in with me.

When we got to the mud hole they pointed out a firm piece of ground near the front which was a step and a little jump to clear the mud.

It was a great experience and I will be doing it again, I just hope I will not be last next time.
